Tempest van Schaik
Tempest is a multi-disciplinary engineer, researcher and inventor. She was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and has a degree in Electrical Engineering, as well as South Africa’s first Biomedical Engineering degree, both from University of the Witwatersrand (Wits).Her PhD in Bioengineering at Imperial College London focused on electrochemical sensors for health research, such as in vitro angiogenesis studies.
She has experience in the end-to-end development of tech to improve health, from basic and applied scientific research at the lab bench, to product development and user-experience.She has experience in the end-to-end development of medical technology, from basic research to UX and product development, to building sensors, collecting data and using data science to understand human health.
She currently works as Machine Learning Engineer at Microsoft, London, focusing on healthcare & biosciences. she applies machine learning to solve real, diverse problems in business and government, using a creative and multi-disciplinary approach.
Recently, she has used ML to better understand the “Physiotherapy of Cystic Fibrosis”. She is also a Fervent ambassador for diversity & inclusion for her team at Microsoft.
