Nigeria Enters the AI Race, Setting Pace for African AI

Greetings, fellow Nigerians and well wishers! I’m Alexander Tsado, co-founder of Alliance for Africa’s Intelligence (alliance4ai.org), and I recently had the distinct honor of leading the Infrastructure pillar at the historic Nigerian AI Strategy Workshop. Let me tell you, the energy in that room was electric! It wasn’t just about brainstorming ideas – it was about witnessing the birth of a movement that will propel Nigeria, and indeed all of Africa, to the forefront of the AI revolution.

My fellow Nigerian AI Avenger, Sonny Iroche, used his article to go in-depth into this historic event, where Nigeria demonstrated how to involve your citizens and diaspora to co-designing the future they want. I got to speak on Arise TV as well after the event, speaking mainly to how Nigeria is uniquely focusing its applications of AI on being inclusive and making life easier for the common citizen.

The Minister of ICT, Dr. Bosun Tijani, unveiled four groundbreaking announcements that sent a clear message: Nigeria is not just entering the AI game; it’s here to play for keeps, and it’s inviting the entire continent to join in.

Announcement #1: Powering Innovation with Affordable Infrastructure

Imagine a young Nigerian scientist with a brilliant idea for an AI-powered solution to a local challenge with global implications. The biggest hurdle? Access to the computing muscle needed to train and develop their creation. Well, that hurdle just got a whole lot smaller! A partnership between Galaxy Backbone and 21st Century Datacenters pledged $2 million for accessible compute infrastructure, with a path to more after this initial pilot. This means more affordable access to the processing power needed to turn those brilliant ideas into reality. This isn’t just about cost savings; it’s about empowering a new generation of Nigerian innovators to solve problems specific to their communities, and applicable for the world at large.

Announcement #2: LangEasy: Breaking Language Barriers in AI

Language shouldn’t be a barrier to progress. Awarri, a Nigerian AI company, is leading the charge with the development of LangEasy, Nigeria’s first multilingual Large Language Model (LLM). This innovative tool focuses on collecting high-quality data on Nigerian languages. Why is this so important? Because it paves the way for AI tools that are accessible to a wider range of Nigerians, fostering inclusion and ensuring everyone benefits from the power of AI.

Announcement # 3: The Nigeria AI Collective: Collaboration is Key

We all know that innovation thrives in an environment of collaboration. That’s why the Nigeria AI Collective was launched – a one-stop shop for all AI professionals in Nigeria to connect, share ideas, and accelerate the growth of the field. This online platform will be a hub for knowledge exchange, project development, and fostering a spirit of community. From seasoned researchers to aspiring students, the Nigeria AI Collective offers a space for everyone to contribute and learn. So, if you’re an AI enthusiast in Nigeria, head over to https://ncair.nitda.gov.ng/ and join the movement!

Announcement #4: From Idea to Reality in Record Time! A Conference Chatbot for the People

This announcement truly exemplifies the power of AI and the “can-do” spirit of Honourable Minister Bosun Tijani. Just a week before the workshop, the Minister received an open letter on LinkedIn proposing an AI chatbot to serve the event. Intrigued, he not only endorsed the idea but also flew in the proposal’s author and their team! Together, they built a brand new AI chatbot that followed the entire workshop, capturing discussions and providing a real-time interface for all Nigerians to access the content. Talk about lightspeed progress! This incredible story highlights the Minister’s commitment to using AI for the benefit of the people and the agility with which Nigeria is embracing this technology. Talk to the chatbot here.

These announcements mark a pivotal moment for Nigeria and Africa as a whole. By making AI development more affordable, inclusive, collaborative, and responsive, Nigeria is setting a powerful example for the continent. The future of AI is bright, and Africa is poised to play a leading role. Stay tuned, because this is just the beginning!
